Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein

Reviewed by Karen Payne

First published in 1974, Shel Silverstein's classic odes, poems, and drawings live on in his timeless book 'Where the Sidewalk Ends'.

A book that spans the ages – from early childhood through adulthood – his humorous and delightfully silly poems offer something for everyone. From a short four-line rhyming verse to a two-page descriptive tale, the content is wildly diverse and yet comfortingly familiar. Silverstein's ability to chose a theme and make it relevant, yet often whimsical and totally nonsensical, adheres him to a wide, and devoted, reading audience. Read by families over decades, Where the Sidewalk Ends is a book that belongs on everyone's book shelf, regardless of their age. As a parent and educator, it has been a 'go-to' book in my own personal and professional library for many years. I recommend it to parents as a delightful and entertaining read with their children.

Just open up any page and you will find yourself smiling...

  1. Shel Silverstein has always been a favorite of mine! I was introduced to poetry through Silverstein in 7th grade and always try to integrate his work into my teaching as often as possible. Silverstein's work is a great way to get students interested in reading poetry.
