The Girl in the Well is Me

The Girl in the Well is Me - By Karen Rivers is a refreshingly unique book. Kammie, the main character, spends the entire book trapped in an old well. We learn about Kammie's life through a series of flash backs, and Kammie's thoughtful reflections on her life. We learn that she fell down the well when she was trying her hardest to become a member of the 'Cool Girls' from her new school. Kammie thinks a lot about her need to fit in, and how that might be something she can forgo. As the book progresses, and as Kammie is stuck in the well through the night, her thoughts drift from reality and begin to take on a strange dreamy quality which leads her to discussing her life, in french, with an imaginary coyote who is sitting on her head.
The Girl in the Well is Me  was a quick read with a lot of vivid imagery. Rivers delves deep into the psyche of a middle school girl who is struggling to come to terms with the changes in her family, and the changes that are quickly happening in her life.
I would recommend The Girl in the Well is Me  to late elementary to early middle school girls who are stronger readers. I think this book addresses issues that every girl faces as she transitions from being a child into young-adulthood.
