10-14-16 Poetry Sarah Kremple

Dear Hot Dog by Mordicai Gerstein

This is a cute book about ordinary things that poems are never written about. There are poems about pants, air, spaghetti and your teddy bear. It is a fun book that gives beauty and prose to underestimated items. You could use this book as an introduction to poetry and emphasize that you can write a poem about anything. This was a Caldecott medal winner. The illustrations are silly but also soothing. The poems are simple, easy to read, and most of them have a goofy twist on them. For example, there is a poem about Crayons, and how each color relates to real world things like “red is full of apples, lips, and the fire of exploding volcanoes”.
I would recommend this for students that are hesitant to write poetry because “they aren’t good writers”. This book will make them laugh and make them realize that they are totally capable of writing poetry, and it can even be fun!

  1. I think I'll be getting this book!! Looks great! I always appreciate when others appreciate the often, little, overlooked items in life.
