10-7-16, Sarah Kremple's Nonfiction: informational genre

Hawai’i By Shelly Gill, illustrated by Scott Goto

This is a fantastic non-fiction book about Hawai’i that is told in the perspective of a little boy who grew up in the island of Hawai’i. It is narrated through his and his ancestor’s eyes. He tells stories about his father who is a warrior and the beautiful landscape around where he lives. They also accurately depict that the European explorers didn’t really “discover” anything, but landed on the islands and claimed them as their own.
It has gorgeous pictures that show the ocean, animals, maps and historical figures who have influenced the 8 islands. The journey goes through each island and shares a few facts about each one. As a person who is going to Hawai’i for this first time in December, this was a great introduction to what I am going to see there. I would recommend this book for a state report, a read aloud, or a resource for a study on islands or volcanoes.
