Thalassa Papakonstantis - other - D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths
The Greek myths are a universally enjoyed cast of characters and stories. The
D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths is well known for it's inventive illustrations. Written in 1962, many generations of children of elementary school ages have wrapped their heads around these theatrical and highly dramatic tales. Somehow Ingri and Edgar Parin d'Aulaire were able to capture the intensity and violence in these stories yet without scaring the reader at all, whether with words or illustrations. The drawings are considered almost art-deco, and very instinctive.

I absolutely love the artwork! The first thing that came to my mind was creating an art extension beyond the lesson(especially since many schools do not offer art).
ReplyDeleteMy class is super interested in Greek Mythology this year. Thanks for the review :) can't wait to share this with my class.

A strong and pity review! It is amazing how edgy and raw these stories can be, without scaring (or scarring) the readers.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had grown up with this book! I would have a better imagination now ; ) You might find this post from my journal interesting... It begins with a video of reading an excerpt from D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths. http://www.solidgould.net/edrl520-reading-journal/20-minutes-after-class
