Thalassa Papakonstantis - other - D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths

The Greek myths are a universally enjoyed cast of characters and stories. The

D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths is well known for it's inventive illustrations. Written in 1962, many generations of children of elementary school ages  have wrapped their heads around these theatrical and highly dramatic tales. Somehow Ingri and Edgar Parin d'Aulaire were able to capture the intensity and violence in these stories yet without scaring the reader at all, whether with words or illustrations. The drawings are considered almost art-deco, and very instinctive.
The myths, like most epic stories, contain some moral lessons, mostly in the form of examples to not follow.  These powerful entities live by impulse and rarely think ahead, yet they almost always suffer consequences, and thst are important lessons for a child. They tell the young one that mistakes do happen, that people are full of many emotions and impulses, and even a 'great', or 'god-like' being has to adhere to common decency or else they end up paying one way or another. A lesson for people of all ages!

  1. I absolutely love the artwork! The first thing that came to my mind was creating an art extension beyond the lesson(especially since many schools do not offer art).

  3. A strong and pity review! It is amazing how edgy and raw these stories can be, without scaring (or scarring) the readers.

I wish I had grown up with this book! I would have a better imagination now ; ) You might find this post from my journal interesting... It begins with a video of reading an excerpt from D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths. http://www.solidgould.net/edrl520-reading-journal/20-minutes-after-class
