Freedom Heroines By: Freida Wishinsky

Freedom Heroines is a fantastic easy read that is full of inspirational and powerful American women. This book covers important societal issues that are mentioned in textbooks but breaks away from Caucasian and male- centered heroes to six multicultural heroines. One section in particular that resonated with me was about Ida B. Wells. Ida was a teacher and activist that spoke out against racial discrimination. Her work reflected her passion for women’s rights, equality and fair treatment as well as her bravery and ability to speak up in spite of being shunned by others. Wells’ legacy continues to foster change by the NAACP which she helped form.

The information in the book is complemented by the text structure and visual appeal of photographs and captions. At the end go the book there is a list of electronic resources the students can visit to further explore the lives of these heroic women. This would make for a great independent reading book that could meet both the informational and biographical genres.
