I Am Jackie Robinson reviewed by Danya-Biography (Children's Book)

Genre: Biography
I am Jackie Robinson
Brad Meltzer
Illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulous

As a first grade teacher, it can sometimes be a struggle to find biographies that present students with enough information about specific figures, yet at the same time appropriately present the information. Brad Meltzer seems to successfully do just that in his series of biographies. The illustrations by Christopher Eliopoulous are especially significant to this biography.  They are engaging, exciting, and often include speech bubbles-which students love. Meltzer covers much of Jackie Robinson’s life including his struggles and successes and presents them in child friendly language.

This biography would be great as a read aloud first/second grade and an independent read in 2nd/3rd grade. I would encourage teachers to read this their classes when discussing equal rights and important figures that shaped society. I look forward to reading more of Meltzer’s children’s book biographies with my class. I highly recommend these biographies to early primary teachers who are looking for appropriate and engaging biographies for their students.

  1. This was one of the biography books I looked at as well. I felt it provided a lot of good information about Jesse Robinson and the illustrations make it more relevant for younger students. Great review!
