The Kane Chronicles

I hope this isn't shameless, but after being inspired through our EDRL 524 course to begin a reader's response blog page for my students, I have been increasingly impressed by my students' submissions. I thought I would share two of my student's recent blogs.  I just love the tone of excitement their reviews...how wonderful to be lost in a book!

After reading her response, I am inspired to read them too. Since I finished Cast Two Shadows on the first day of Thanksgiving break, and I thought I would have a lot of time to read during the break, I decided to reread one of my favorite series of all time, The Kane Chronicles. I finished The Red Pyramid, the first book in the series, yesterday, and I started The Throne of Fire today. The Kane Chronicles are about two teenage siblings, named Sadie and Carter Kane, who descendants of two of the most ancient, Egyptian pharaoh bloodlines, which makes them great at Egyptian magic. Their parents both died early in the series, trying to release the banned Egyptian gods. (They were banned by the House of Life after the fall of the Egyptian Empire.) The gods promptly start possessing magicians and trying to destroy the world. All of the magicians are part of the House of Life, a system of 360 gnomes that are spread out around the world. As you can probably tell from my inability to properly summarize these books in a single paragraph, this series is quite complicated and extremely action-packed. There are funny moments as well as suspenseful and sad ones. I love these books and I would recommend them to anyone who has previously read, and enjoyed, other books by Rick Riordan.  I am currently reading The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan. It is the fifth book in The Heroes of Olympus series. This style of book is different from most books because it switches main characters about every 4 chapters. I am about 100 pages in and it is not very exciting because I can tell it is at the “rising action” part of a book. So far it has featured 3 characters, Jason, Reyna, and Leo. Jason fought off a small army of ghosts brought back to life as earth beings. While fighting Jason was wounded but i think he will get better. The next character, Reyna, is with a son of Pluto named Nico, and Nico and Reyna have to get a huge statue all the way across the world. They are doing this because they need get the statue back to Camp Half Blood to try and stop a war, between the Greeks and the Romans, from starting. I just finished Reyna’s section and I have started Leo’s section. I really enjoy this series and other books by Rick Riordan.
