The Lorax by Dr. Suess is a wonderful and inspiring story of environmental awareness. In the story, all the trees are chopped down to create "thneeds" and sell them. As the "thneed" factory grows bigger and and the trees are depleted, the environment begins to break down. Animals must leave the area and the Lorax (who speaks for the trees) eventually has to leave soon. The book is a moving story with a lesson of "unless". These things may be happening in our environment but we can be the "unless" and care about saving the trees. The bright illustrations and silly words also make it a fun read. I think children preschool through elementary school would enjoy this read.
