Blood Song
This is a wordless book, that could be defined as a "graphic novel" or as the author/artists states in the title: "A Silent Ballad." It is a beautifully crafted artistic approach to telling a story without any words and only by the use of pictures and colors does the reader take on the complexities of the plot. It is the story of a young girl who goes from her loving fishing family in the jungle on an escape/adventure from destruction and self awareness and ends up in an unfamiliar world. I would recommend this book for later middle school and up because it deals with issues such as murder, birth, war, love, children, prison, racism, and puberty. I feel that Blood Song would be an amazing way to get discussions about not only specific aspects of literature (plots, character development, etc.) but a way to connect to modern social issues that affect us all.
