The Day the Crayons Quit

A hilarious and fun book about...The Day the Crayons Quit.  Duncan receives an ominous stack of mail from his crayons. Red, purple, beige, gray, white, black, green, yellow, orange, blue, pink, and peach crayons have all quit, stating their various grievances in the form of personal letters to Duncan.  Letters from the crayon colors are written with such voice, levity, and humor, that the reader is immediately drawn into the fantasy world of the crayons.  Providing a unique perspective, each crayon gives very convincing reasons as to why they are all up in arms!

The humorous and clever illustrations by Oliver Jeffers support the witty text by Drew Daywalt and keep the reader curiously turning the page.  The clear, simple illustrations remind the reader of the clean pages of a drawing sketchpad, while the letters from the crayons seem to jump off the page into the hands of the reader.

Young children will love interacting with the text and the engaging story line provides a story structure that even the youngest readers will enjoy.  Children will open up their crayon boxes hoping for their own crayons to someday quit!  Entertaining, witty, and fun, an engaging book for primary students that also leaves room for many curricular connections including personal narrative, letter writing, voice, differing perspectives, creativity, and the list goes on...!  A fun read-aloud, I have no doubt this book will quickly becoming a classroom favorite to be read again and again.
