The Surprise
by Sylvia van Ommen
This is a wordless picture book that I found at the library. The sheep on a scooter, the beautiful artwork and the "surprise" drew me in. The story is about a sheep, who realizes one day that his wooly coat has gotten quite long. He proceeds to go to the store, buy some dye, dye his wool, shave it off, have the wool spun into yarn, and then start a knitting project. This takes many scooter trips, and in the end he has something to bring to his friend, Giraffe. Giraffe opens the package to see the surprise: a lovely red sweater!
I think this is a great book for children because it teaches them where wool comes from, how a sweater is made, and how you do something caring for a friend. In the age of instant gratification and store bought everything, this is a reminder of the joy of creating something special and unique, and generosity.
