This is a great story that helps kids understand the importance of being kind to one another and accepting one another's differences. It is a social-emotional learning book, as well as an anti-bullying and empowering story.

Crisantemo by Kevin Henkes
Crisantemo is one of the books I use at the beginning of the school year because it focuses on social-emotional learning. In this book, the main character is named after a flower, a Chrysanthemum. She is very proud of her name, until she gets to school. At school she is teased about her name. This affects her self-esteem and she starts having very bad days at school. She walks around with her head down and slumped shoulders. Until one day, her beautiful radian music teacher, changes it all around for her.
