Mibs' thirteenth birthday is on its way, and she knows something is going to happen. Everyone from her mother's side of the family gets their "savvy" when they turn thirteen. None of them knew what their savvies were until their thirteenth birthdays, when each one's arrived, and Mibs is in the same boat. Her oldest brother Rocket has an electric charge that can be shocking, and Fish, her other older brother has a way of starting storms and changing the weather. A simple thirteenth birthday should be easy to come by, but Mibs' Poppa gets is a terrible car accident and is hospitalized in faraway Salina, taking Momma and Rocket to be with him and forcing any celebrating to be postponed, or forgotten. Without fail, however, Mibs develops her savvy come thirteen and the troubles she gets into, with the help of two of her brothers, Fish and Samson, and the Meeks kids, set them off on an adventure (aboard a pink Bible bus) to save Poppa and she learns a lot about herself. Law's story is charming and modern enough for some picky readers. The Beaumont family are like a midwest version of the X-Men. They are often cast aside, being different, and this serves for good conversation about how we think of people before we really know them. A sweet read!
