Melina Olenberger's Review of "A Big Guy Took My Ball" by Mo Wellems

Gerald and Piggie are best friends.   In A Big Guy Took My Ball! Piggie is devastated when a big guy takes her ball! Gerald is big, too...but is he big enough to help his best friend?  The "Elephant and Piggie" series is fun and engaging for emergent readers.  In each book, Willems does and excellent job of telling interesting stories through simple text that young readers can access.  To top it all off, each story is told through speech bubbles, encouraging the reader to play around with voice and intonation.  I highly recommend Elephant and Piggie books for emergent readers.

  1. I think that this book sounds amazing for second language learners. This is also a good book to talk about lessons around sharing and what to do in situations where one might feel sad because of a toy being taken, etc.

  2. This book seems like a great read aloud for children with their parents. I was even thinking that this particular story would make for a great first week of school read aloud. It would be a great reference point when talking to children about bullying and being kind to each other.

  3. Every Elephant & Piggie book that exists is a true delight! I've used them to discuss/teach/wonder about so many topics with kindergarteners. Thanks for sharing!
