Melina Olenberger's Review of "Poetry for Young People: Robert Frost" by Robert Frost, Gary D. Schmidt (Editor), Henri Sorenson (Illustrator)

"Poetry for Young People," is a wonderful series that enables younger children to experience poetry in a way that is understandable to them. This one with a collection of poems by Robert Frost is very enchanting, with its warm photos and the different seasons that are seen.  The Illustrations consist of abstract paintings, that just capture the essence of the season you are in (in the poem). For example in a "A Patch of Old Snow" in the image you see a patch of snow amongst naked trees, and you can almost feel the cool breeze and fresh air, because of the illustration. Something else that is really neat about this book is the way it is set up for children, there is a short explanation of each poem at the bottom, this enables children to better understand the main concept of the poems. This is really good for children, poetry is important as it requires young children to critically think about the selective words used in the poem and what the poet is trying to say, its more complicated than a picture book and therefore more stimulating for their minds.

  1. This sounds like a wonderful book! You sold me on it with your review! I was wondering what age children you think it would be appropriate for? You mentioned young children but would 3 - 5 year old preschoolers understand the poems and get meaning from them - I'm sure they would love the illustrations...
Thank you for adding a poetry book to my list of books to read :)
