Book: Sisters by: Raina Telgemeier
Annotation: This graphic novel is about a young girl named
Raina who is going through things like having parents who fight, having a
sister who annoys her, and cousins and family members who she doesn’t feel like
she fits in with. The story follows Raina and shows her feelings through minimal
text and a lot of cartoonist images.
Illustrations by: Raina Telgemeier
Opinion: This graphic novel would be amazing for an
elementary or middle school reader because of its relevance to everyone’s
lives. The things that Raina goes through are very relatable to that developmental
stage and time period for many. The minimal text and massive cartoon
illustrations might grab the attention of someone who doesn’t necessarily think
that they are the best reader. This novel is very interesting in that it uses illustrations
to give context of the story, and allows the reader to “read” through both text
and visuals. I would most definitely recommend this book to any reader because
it is relevant and relatable on so many levels.
Questions for future readers: How does this graphic novel
represent your life? What struggles do you see that Raina has in this novel
that you have also faced? Do you take anything away from the way she handles
certain situations? If so, how could you change the way you deal with stressful
life situations to make a positive outcome?
