Storm Run: The Story of the First Woman to Win the Iditarod Sled Dog Race

In 1985 Libby Riddless became the first woman to win the iconic Iditarod Dog Race in Alaska. In her memoir, Storm Run Libby describes how her love for animals and the wilderness transformed her from an inexperienced teenager from the Midwest to an award winning Alaskan musher. Libby's story chronicles her challenging experiences that lead her to win her third Iditarod. Her writing emphasizes the importance of goal setting, determination, and breaking down barriers. She states, "Running the Iditarod had been very hard, and I had been cold and tired most of the time. Still, there was something special about the way the race challenged me to be and do my very best. I liked that. And I loved spending time with my dogs."

This book makes for a great mentor text that could be used for writing as it provides great examples of imagery and metaphor. Students could easily understand and replicate Riddle's style of writing in their own pieces. Also, in addition to the illustrations, the book contains many common structures that can be found in a naon-fiction book including photographs, captions, and diagrams which help bring context to the reader and allow for easier navigation of the text.
