Meryl Blomseth: Bone Gap by Laura Ruby

Bone Gap is a small town surrounded by the corn fields of Illinois. This book explores the powers of small town talk and the effects of gossip. Laura Ruby investigates the idea of self perception and outsider opinion through the lens of four characters: Finn, Sean, Roza, and Petey.

Finn and Sean are brothers who have been left to figure out life on their own, when their mother leaves town with her new boyfriend. Sean is the older brother who gives up his dreams of becoming a doctor to take care of his younger brother Finn. The town reveres Sean as a strong, smart, hero. Finn is a handsome teenager the town of Bone Gap calls "Spaceman". When Finn finds a tattered, beautiful, and strikingly odd woman in his barn, his life changes in ways he never thought possible.

Roza is a young, gorgeous Polish woman who seems to be plopped into Bone Gap. She loves gardening and is loved by the people of Bone Gap. Somehow she goes missing and Finn's interest in finding her makes the people of Bone Gap think he loves her, when in reality he loves Petey.

This book will thrill you into another world and make you feel utterly terrified. I could not stop myself from reading it. It is literally breathtaking. The journey of the four characters is unexpected and absolutely enthralling. Laura Ruby's writing is described as magical realism. I was definitely transported to another world. It is a must read!
