Karen Payne EDRL 524 - Fall 2016. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

'The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian' is a narrative that will touch the hearts of all who read it. Written by Sherman Alexie, it eloquently, and accurately, portrays the tumultuous life of a Native American teenage boy striving to discover his true identity.

Junior, born and raised on the Spokane Indian Reservation, realizes, at an early age, that he is different from the other kids on the reservation. Desperate for a better life, he chooses to attend the all-white school high school in a neighboring town, even though this means leaving his family, and alienating the one true friend he has on the reservation. Facing adversity and prejudice, along with all the typical challenges of a teenage boy, Junior demonstrates resilience, strength, and determination to succeed. Not only does he have to traverse the minefield of adolescence, he also faces adversity as he navigates white culture, relationships, poverty, and segregation.

This young adult book is beautifully written and will appeal to teens, young adults, and parents everywhere. Written with humor, and dotted with cartoon-style illustrations, it is an easy read and one that will entertain it's readers. Not only is it a relevant, and heart-breakingly honest account of diversity across cultures, it also highlights the influences of family, together with the many stereotypes and prejudices that continue to exist in society today.

  1. It is very interesting that Junior wanted a "better life" for himself. That makes me wonder what is a better life and who decides what that looks like?
