Uglies by Scott Westerfeld is a futuristic scientific fiction story. In the book, when children turn sixteen they undergo an operation that turns you into a perfectly Pretty human being that lives in a Pretty Town. Tally is the main character, and is soon to turn sixteen in the beginning of the book. But Tally meets a friend who questions their society and runs away to a hidden town to remain an Ugly. The authorities threaten Tally to lead them to the hidden town and turn in her friend or they will never allow her to become Pretty. As Tally discovers that the Pretty surgery includes damaging of the brain, she decides she needs to stay in the hidden town of Uglies. The rest of the story covers Tally's fight with staying Ugly and rescuing captives from the Special Circumstances (authorities). This is a wonderful book for late middle school through high schoolers. It is the first book in a trilogy of books about Tally and her relationships with friends and Special Circumstances. She goes through many struggles that teenagers can relate to and she questions society and its influence on us.
