The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo

The beautiful china rabbit, Edward Tulane, doesn’t love anyone – including his ten-year-old owner, Abilene.  Although Abilene dotes on Edward endlessly, her affections go unrequited, and instead Edward spends his days annoyed with all those around him, concerned only about his own vanity.  One day, Edward is swept overboard into the sea, and so begins his miraculous journey, as he unexpectedly finds his way into the hands of a number of owners. With each new adventure on his journey, Edward learns more about himself through new perspectives and the kindness of others.

Told through the eyes of Edward, students will be captivated by his adventures, the vivid and masterful storytelling by DiCamillo, and most of all, the intriguing character in Edward. The story makes an engaging and rewarding read-aloud for students Grades 3-5 and the short, well-written chapters flow easily throughout the book.  Students are often begging for more and teachers will find many opportunities for close reading, comprehension lessons, and transmediation of the text. Touching on many universal themes, this emotional tale is a well-deserved classic not to be missed.
