Empty Fridge

In the style of the classic tale Stone Soup, Empty Fridge takes us to a city apartment building, full of people who are all too busy throughout their day to find time to buy groceries. After an exhausting day, Andrew, who lives on the steps, realizes he only has a carrot for dinner! He goes up to the first floor to visit his neighbor: "if only he has some peas..." he neighbor doesn't have any peas, but he does have cheese! Together they visit the next neighbor, who comes with them to visit the next...up up up they go, and soon they come together to bake a delicious quiche. And to their surprise, all across the city, everyone is coming together to make something, too!
A wonderful story about community, representing many different types of people, who are willing to share with each other. With dazzling and unique illustrations, Gaetan Doremus colors each character with the color of their food, which follows them upward to the next floor, until by the end of the story they have made a rainbow.  This story is written very simply and can be enjoyed by preschool age through elementary age children. However with such lovely pictures, it could easily be understood by younger children, as well. A wonderful tool for getting children talking about neighborhoods, community, and where food comes from!
