Too Many Tamales by Gary Soto has always been a favorite of mine, since 1993 as a matter of fact. This is especially a wonderful story to share with bicultural children, since this story touches upon a very special tradition for many Mexico and many Latin American countries. In this story, Maria happily and proudly helps her mother make the traditional tamales for Christmas eve. Maria's mom takes off her diamond ring, which Maria puts on to admire. The ring disappears and Maria thinks she has lost in the tamales. The rest of the story is a cute depiction of how children react when they think they are going to get into trouble. This is a wonderful story with a great message.
