"The Barefoot Book of Classic Poems" compiled and
illustrated by Jackie Morris.
The illustrations in this book are beautiful, and the
collection of poems is really lovely. There are really short, cute,
simple poems about cats or dreams or birds, but there are also dense, well
known, tricky to read poems and ones which require thought. I think it is
a book of poetry which could remain with a child all through school!
Jackie
Morris has included works by Sylvia Plath, e.e. cummings and other extremely
well known poets however the specific poems chosen to be included in the this
collection are all appropriate topics for children. Many poems describe dreams, animals, nautical
themes and children
The
illustrations are extremely detailed, fantastical and use very bold colors. It
is clear that one illustrator created all of the pictures which work to create
a cohesive look and combines all of the poems together.
This
book brings together a wide range of reading levels in this book, which allows
the reader to browse many poems and read and dig into the one that has meaning
to her.
