A Day With Wilbur Robinson- Unique Family Story Classic (Katie Vanko EDRL 524) Fall 2014

A Day With Wilbur Robinson by William Joyce
Everyone has unique families.  You know, the great aunt who mispronounces your name… Or, the younger brother who is convinced he is the lead singer of the biggest rock and roll band.
A Day With Wilbur Robinson by William Joyce personifies the ultimate eccentric family!  Part of the fictional picture book genre, this book follows twelve-year old Lewis to the home of his friend Wilbur for a visit.
Wilbur has a very innovative family of scientists, inventors, entertainers, and musicians.  Robots are wandering the premises, as the octopus servant answers the door.  Wilbur shows Lewis around.  Lewis meets Wilbur’s family members who have everything from antigravity devices to launching cannon balls.  Suddenly Wilbur’s grandfather notices he misplaced his denture teeth while leading an orchestra of frogs.  The entire household searches for the teeth.   Will they ever be found?

Every person, young and old should read this mesmerizing book.  It is exciting, imaginative, and so funny.  Each and every family member is vividly described, helping readers connect the characters to people in their own lives.   The book shows readers that every family is quirky, and we should celebrate the qualities about each of our families.  The author reaches all cultures and genders with the fast past, witty plot.  It is a classic book about families with an added futuristic twist.  I remember reading it with my own father growing up, pausing, and laughing at the different situations on each page.  The book allows for many opportunities to ask questions, make predictions, and make observations. It is beautifully illustrated with colors that make characters jump off the page.  The book was recently made into a movie which DOES NOT EVEN COME CLOSE to being as great!
