Smelly Socks
reviewed by Christine Cook
If you like The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch, you will most likely enjoy some of his other titles. Smelly Socks is about a girl who is in need of new socks and ends up picking out the coolest ones to wear. She likes them so much; she won't take them off! As time goes by those colorful socks become Smelly Socks! Everyone around, even the raccoons, want her to take those smelly socks off and wash them. It takes involvement of friends and local animal friends to fix those smelly socks.
For teachers, this book is excellent as a read aloud, and as part of an author study assignment. Robert Munsch was first a story teller to classrooms and at library read-alouds. You can find soundtracks of him reading his books and it really helps them come alive. The repeated sayings and noises like swish swish and splash splash make it fun to read with a group. Munsch often teams up with the illustrator, Michael Marchenko. The illustrations by Martchenko are colorful, eye catching, and comedic. They can inspire class art projects and make even the biggest grumpy bunny giggle.
