The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
This teen romance novel has recently been made into a movie. It concerns the protagonist Hazel who's had many a brush with death due to cancer affecting her lungs. As a result she's been isolated from her peers and always hooked up to an oxygen tank. With the urging of her mother, she attends a teen cancer support group where she meets a like-minded soul, Gus, who has had a limb removed from a bone cancer. These two form a strong and passionate bond over literature, video games, and each other. Although it sounds morbid and sad, cancer plays an important role in this novel as a motivator for the young lovers to explore their world with as much vigor and passion as they can. Hazel and Gus are smart beyond their years and the dialogue reflects this. Recommended for middle school and early high school teens, probably girls.
