Upon
request of my favorite book, I instantly thought of the Newbery Award winner, Number the Stars, by
Lois Lowry. My copy is falling to pieces
as I have read it, probably, 10 times. This book was the first in my
favorite genre of historical fiction and crosses over into the coming of age
genre, as well. This solemn story takes place in Copenhagen,
Denmark, 1943, during WWII, when a courageous 10 year-old girl, Annemarie, witnesses the
horror bestowed upon everyone, especially the Jews, by the Nazi soldiers.
As an adolescent, this book gave me an understanding of an historical
atrocity that was difficult to understand at the time. I was also,
relieved to have the opportunity to read this book, especially after finding The Diary of Anne Frank to be difficult to follow, even though everybody had
recommended it. Number the Stars would be a good read for a 12 year old and up, especially for those students studying WWII. Lily Woll
