This graphic novel memoir is a follow up to Marjane Satrapi's original 'Persepolis'. Just like the first, Persepolis 2 is genuine, humorous, heartfelt and enthralling. She continues the story of her young adult life, when she moves to Vienna from Iran to escape the political and religious turmoil her home country is facing. Upon her arrival in Vienna, she faces challenges as well as friendships and exciting new experiences. One of the reasons these stories are so accessible are that they deal with issues that all young people encounter: family trouble, making new friends, starting at a new school and trying to find a place where she feels like she truly 'belongs'. Later on when she goes home she has to navigate the adult world of college and even marriage. She does all this while simultaneously making the reader laugh and smile, even though she deals with very serious issues, she never fails to see the humor and love that prevails in life. This graphic novel memoir is a great way to introduce young readers to the reality of life many other people face in other countries in the world. This could also be an especially good story to share with students who are bilingual, or have lived in more than one country. She shares experiences of adapting to a new country, culture and language. There are struggles, but also joy, such as the moment when she and her roommate are teaching each other their native languages, and she begins to learn to speak German and interact with new people. This along with college, love, marriage, family and war are just some of the engrossing stories that Marjane Satrapi shares with us in her extraordinary memoir. This book great for adults and young adults alike, it will open your eyes and your heart and leave you wanting more.
