The Year of the Ox
Oliver Chin
Illustrations by Miah Alcorn
I had the pleasure of meeting this author at the Sonoma County Book fair this fall and was impressed his work and passion for writing children's literature. Chin finds unique characters to expose children to hints of Asian-American culture while creating engaging and readable stories.
The Zodiac series is a project for Chin where he releases a tale each year based on the Chinese Zodiac calendar. This San Francisco author is praised for his Pacific Rim pop culture in his writing.
The Year of the Ox is the 2009 edition to the series. Previously Chin has released The Year of the Dog, Pig, and Rat. In 2010 The Year of the Tiger will follow with a new illustrator.
These stories are cute and humorous while offering a lesson learning adventure. I can't express how much I recommend them as a classroom addition or for a home library. And not to push a sale, but they would also be a great gift for expectant parents or loved ones who know their Chinese Zodiac sign.
