Drylongso, written by Virginia Hamilton and Illustrated by Jerry Pinkley, is a story to remind you that you never know what is going to happen. Lindy and her parents are experiencing a terrible drought and their farm is struggling to survive. Lindy seems to keep the times passing with her funny personality, curiosity and her observations. One day while working out in the drought stricken fields on the family’s farm, Lindy spots over her fathers shoulder what she has only imagined, a dust storm. The dust storm not only brought dust, wind and just plain miserableness, it also brought something unexpected. As the family watched the storm encroach on their farm a stranger stumbled on to their door step. The family took in the young stranger, Drylongso, and he soon answered their problems with the drought. A thought provoking story with an African American folktale twist. -CW Elementary Teacher
