The Fair at Kanta, A Story from Peru by Carlos Antonio Llerena Aguirre


The Fair at Kanta is a magical story of a young boy names Paucar who lost his parents in a terrible earthquake. He sent to live with his grandmother on the Puna, the very highest part in the Andes Mountains in Peru. Paucar and his grandmother life a simple life, tending to the llamas and growing Barley. When the Barley is ready to be harvested Paucar needs to take a journey to the fair at Kanta to trade the Barley for other goods. The journey is long and dangerous. His grandmother gives him a magic flute to play in case of danger. With the help of the flute Paucar can magically understand the language of the animals. Will Paucar make it to the fair at Kanta with the Barley??

The story uses the native Inca language throughout the book. The black and white illustrations are simply amazing and show much detail. This story is a wonderful look at Peruvian life in the mountains mixed with a magically journey.
