After Tupac and D Foster bring us the story of three girls who become bonded though real-life experiences. Two best friends living in Queens, NY, meet "D" Foster, a mysteriously cool stranger to the neighborhood. The three twelve-year-old's become inseparable as they try to understand what their "Big Purpose" is, while learning about themselves and each other. The author subtly brings forth topics like poverty, foster care, homosexual family members, jail/police/racial profiling, and other facets of some African Americans' urban life not usually found in many young adult books but often found in their lives. Woodson weaves through these families from Neeka's perspective (one of the friends), Neeka having a thoughtful personality which helps guide the reader on this journey. The girls experience tremendous growth via their different situations, while all along the rhythmic notes of Tupac Shakur's life and music give a cultural backbone to the story that can offer yet another connection for those who love the rapper, or a new perspective to those who don't know much about him or the culture. Great for upper elementary!
