Helen Recorvits's My Name is Yoon, is a stimulating picture book about a young girl named Yoon who has moved to the United States from Korea, and is having difficulties finding her place. This story provides many lessons of friendship, hardship, and self awareness. I also find this story as a reminder to teachers who have children like Yoon in our classrooms. It reminds us of how they view the world around them, and how a little recognition can go a long way. Illustrator Gabi Swiatkowska provides soft but detailed imagery that captures the feelings and imaginations of children. A perfect read for any classroom no matter where your students come from.
