This adorable tale was written by Roni Schotter and illustrated by Giselle Potter - is it a coincidence that their last names rhyme? The tale begins by describing a little boy, Selig, who collects words. He adores everything about words, "the sound of them in his ears (tintinnabulating!), the taste of them on his tongue (tantalizing!), the thought of them when they percolated in this brain (stirring!)." Unfortunately, he is misunderstood by his parents and his classmates so he decides to begin a journey of self discovery. He finds out that he can use the words he collects to enrich others' lives. The story ends ever so happily when as a young man he meets a woman who sings and they combine their talents!
This story is peppered with rich, colorful words not only in the text, but also in the illustrations. This book would be perfect to use as an example of how to use context to figure out the meaning of words. There is also a glossary at the end of the book to help out. Hopefully your students will emulate "The Boy Who Loved Words" as they too discover the power and beauty that words hold.
