Stella Blackstone’s
My Granny Went to the Market: A Round-the-World Counting Rhyme, is a colorful read aloud that takes Granny on a trip around the world to different markets by way of flying carpet. Illustrator Christopher Corr brings out the colors of the world through his illustrations of the cultural artifacts that Granny encounters and buys on her journey. Children can count, rhyme, and predict as they travel with Granny around the world all while being introduced to different cultures of the world. What I find most fabulous about this book is that the story does not have to end on the last page. Students can travel to more places around the world to inquire and explore other cultures of the past, present, and even the future. Where will your magic carpet take you and your students next?
